Broadening the Horizon for Taiwan Studies through Visualization: The Photography Database of the National Taipei University of Education

The Taiwan Research Unit of the Ruhr University Bochum, the East Asia Department of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (SBB), and the National Taipei University of Education (NTUE) will join forces to work on a publicly accessible photo database project. NTUE is the oldest modern educational institution in Taiwan and has produced many images in its 127-year history, which record various aspects of student life and teachers’ education. In the late 2000s, these pictures were digitalized and are stored in the Alumnus Service Center but lack a public portal to access them. With the generous support of the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation (CCKF), we are now able to create an image database with cross-references to existing databases (CrossAsia, etc.) through keywords and extensive annotations for each keyword.

The National Taipei University of Education (NTUE 國立臺北教育大學), now in Taipei’s Daan District, is Taiwan’s oldest modern public education institution. Its predecessor can be traced back to the Shizangan School (Shizangan gakudō 芝山巖學堂), founded in 1895 by the Japanese colonial government. In 1896, the Shizangan School was merged into the newly launched Normal School at Taihoku (Taipei), or the National Language School in literal translation, and moved into the new campus in today’s central Taipei the following year. In the early days of Japanese rule, the Normal School at Taihoku shouldered the dual task of training primary education teachers in Taiwan and providing secondary education for Taiwanese people. It is the alma mater of many leading figures in Taiwan’s modern history.
